Kampen has always used water for trade. The river IJssel still  has a big influence in Kampen’s trade and daily life. Even today Kampen uses the water for trade.

Around 1150 wooden buildings already existed in today’s centre of Kampen. The name Kampen is mentioned int he year 1277. Kampen transformed from simple settlements into a prosperous trading town, and became one of the most powerful and leading cities of the Northwestern Europe. But after this great development the IJssel silted and brought a gradual end to Kampen’s proslerity from 1430 on.

In 1441 Kampen joined the Hanseatic League and the city had much influence. In the year 1448KAmpen build a bridge over the IJssel so they could have closer relationships with the hinterland. In the 19th century Kampen became well known again. But Kampen was difficult to accesbecause of the place by the sea and its surrounding wetlands which were bogged down and shallow. In the 19th century the city catched the problem of the IJssel and so they dammed watercourses to allow for more water at a higher speed by more than one  or two main routes. The result was a less sanded  and silted IJssel. Beside that int he 19th century, there came roads and railways, highways and paved roads instead of sand and mud roads.

In Kampen there are a large number of old and very old buildings and churches. The walled fortress  city is still visible int he streets. There are also three gates over of the twenty int he past.  The old and ancient monuments give the city a rich appearance. The new city hall however is a very modern building swo is the new bridge with the three wheels.

The heritage of Kampen is well preserved. The alluring historical inner city, containing  the neatrly 700 nationally and locally listed buildings, recalls the prosperity of the Hanseatic period of Kampen. Kampen is a beautiful example of an ancient city with a great history.
